October 2008
Dear Friends:
This month, a special exhibition celebrates the publication of
acclaimed photographer and printer Richard Benson's book The
Printed Picture. Opening October 8, the eponymous
exhibition includes more than one hundred works discussed in
Benson's comprehensive survey of photographic technology. In the
Theater 1 and 2 Lobby Galleries, fifty-three poster designs by Batiste
Madalena, who created hand-painted film posters for the Eastman
Theatre in the early 1920s, reveal the singular brilliance of this
celebrated
advertising artist.
P.S.1's slate of fall exhibitions opens October 19, with a number
of single-artist and group exhibitions on view. Among these is NeoHooDoo:
Art for a Forgotten Faith, which explores the ritualistic
elements found in the artistic practices of a wide range of Canadian,
American, Mexican, and South American artists, including José
Bedia, Rebecca Belmore, James Lee Byars, and David Hammons.
I hope you will join us on October 29 for the Opening
Night Preview Party of the eighteenth annual International Fine
Print Dealers Association Print Fair. This event, which benefits
MoMA's Department of Prints and Illustrated Books, promises to be
a memorable evening.
We look forward to seeing you in the galleries.
